A message from the 8th Grade Graduation Committee
Dear 8th grade graduates and families,

We would like to say CONGRATULATIONS to all our 312 graduates! You did it!!!!

What a remarkable and unbelievable year this has been! The first year as a new middle school was stressful for most. A new school campus, an unusual class schedule, many many new faces, but as the year progressed everyone acclimated and got into a really nice groove. The kids got involved with the sports program, the school clubs, choir, theatre, and then, as we approached spring break, the pandemic hit and life as we knew it changed drastically. A 2 week “staycation” turned into 3 months of stay at home orders and home learning. And we successfully survived!
As a committee, we had to shift gears to figure out what we could do and couldn’t do. Things changed daily! And we got through it all TOGETHER!
The idea of planning a celebration party when it’s safe to do so for the kids is still possible. They truly do deserve it!

  • On Tuesday, June 9th, Mr. Allen has planned a distribution day for the students to receive their diplomas, cords and SWAG bags. The students will have an opportunity to take a graduation photo in their gowns that will be distributed that day. If you have already purchased a cap and gown, please have your child wear it to school as it will ease the photo process.

  • We had hoped to distribute yearbooks as well on Tuesday but they are still delayed. The school admin and PTA will let everyone know as soon as they arrive.

  • This week we will begin the process of issuing refunds to those who paid the $395 graduation fee. A formsite will be going out soon, so be on the lookout for that.

On behalf of the graduation committee, we hope everyone has a safe summer. To those going on to BHHS, we look forward to seeing you there and to those who aren’t, we wish everyone much success.

The kids will look back on this year and proudly say they are BVMS very 1st Graduating Class of 2020!

Love always,
8th Grade Graduation Committee

An important update from Principal Kevin Allen

Dear 8th Grade Families,

As we enter the last week of school I want to make sure that you are aware of the upcoming events designed to close out the year and provide our graduates with one last chance to be recognized.

Monday, June 1st:  Drop-Off Bell Tower - Pick-Up Elm

We will be collecting instructional materials from all students.  On this day, students will return their textbooks, instruments, and clean out their lockers.  In order to ensure that this process is safe for our students, staff, and volunteers, everyone MUST adhere to the following guidelines:

  1.  Only come to the school during your specific day/time slot.  These are:

9:00 a.m.   -  10:30 a.m.      Last Names A - G

11:00 a.m. -   12:30 p.m.     Last Names H - N

1:00 p.m.   -   2:30  p.m       Last Names O - Z

  1. Students should enter the school at the Bell Tower Entrance.

  2. In order to reduce the number of people on our campus, only students will be permitted, parents will not be allowed on campus.  If your child has a large instrument to return, please email me ahead so that we can arrange to meet you on the curb to assist.

  3. All students, staff, volunteers and anyone else on campus must wear a mask at all times.  All staff and volunteers will wear gloves.

  4. All students, staff, and volunteers should maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet between themselves and others.  We will have security on campus during these times to supervise and ensure that students maintain this requirement.

  5. Students should bring a backpack with them to carry their textbooks onto the campus and take any items from their lockers.  Locker clean-out will be closely supervised by Mr. Waters.

  6. If your graduate did not receive a lawn sign, please let us know on this day and we will gladly provide one.

  7. Students will not be allowed to sit and chat with their friends, teachers, or parent volunteers.

  8. All students will be provided with a squirt of hand sanitizer upon entering and exiting the campus.

  9. Please, do not drop your child off and leave.  Let your child out at the Bell Tower and pull around to the white curb in front of the school and wait for them to exit.  The entire process should not take more than 5 -10 minutes per child.

Tuesday, June 9th

On this day our 8th grade students will be picking up their honor cords, diplomas and swag bags.  In addition, we have a bit of a surprise!  We are providing our graduates with the opportunity to have their photo taken in their gown with their diploma in front of a special graduation backdrop!  Here is how the day will work and the guidelines to ensure that it is safe for everyone:

  • Students should arrive on the following schedule:

    Last Name A - G        9:00 - 10:30

    Last Name H - N        11 - 12 30

    Last Name O - Z        1 - 2:30

  • 8th graders will enter the front of the school at the main gates.  Parents should wait in their cars in the white-curb drop off area.

  • Students will pick up their pre-labeled swag bags containing their diploma, honor cords, etc. in the Green.  We will have staff directing them.  Once they have their bags, students will enter the B building, go onto the stage through the back stage door and have their photo taken in front of a special graduation backdrop.

  • Students will meet their parents at the white cut-out in front of the school on Elm.

  • Students who have enrolled in a summer school course with the city or BHEF can arrive at a time that works around their class schedule.  Please provide your class registration if you care coming outside of your designated time.

Students will quickly slip their gown on over their clothing along with their honor cords for the photo.  Parents will be provided with a link with which to down-load photos of their child at no cost.  This service is being provided as part of your 8th grade fees.  The link will be sent out early next week.

I want you to know that while this may not be the way we envisioned our school year ending, we are working hard to provide our students with at least one more opportunity to be recognized and honored.  I have to fall back to a place of gratitude that I have not lost anyone close to me through this pandemic.  We have much for which to be thankful in spite of the hand we have been dealt over the last few months.

All my best to our graduating 8th graders!

Kevin Allen

while we anticipate that our sweatshirts will be ready for distribution, production facilities have been hard hit by Covid19 this spring and there may be a delay resulting in another time to pick-up these items.  At this time, it looks as though yearbooks will not be in until late June.  We will keep everyone posted as delivery dates become more concrete.

An important update from Principal Kevin Allen

GRADUATION

On Tuesday, May 26th, we will begin the celebrations recognizing the BVMS Class of 2020!  Our PTA has ordered special BVMS Class of 2020 yard signs that can be placed on your lawn (permits from  the city have been obtained) or displayed in your home in recognition of your graduate.  On this day, many of our teachers will be in front of the school waving at their 8th-grade students as they pull along the white curb, (drop-off lane) in front of the school to receive their yard sign!  Here is what you need to know to make this event safe while we are having fun!!

  1. Families should come to the school on the following schedule:

  • Last Name A - H come to the school between 9am and 10:30am

  • Last Name I - N come to the school between 11am and 12:30pm

  • Last Name O - Z come to the school between 1:15pm and 2:30pm

  1. All individuals  on the passenger side of the car where the sign will be received should be wearing a mask.

  2. Please have the graduate’s name written on a 3x5 card or similar size piece of paper so that we can check them off the list as having received their sign.  Present it to the person handing you your sign (we will be wearing gloves)

  3. Please keep moving in the line and STAY IN YOUR CARS.  NO ONE SHOULD EXIT THEIR CAR.  Once you have received your sign, please exit the line so that we can keep it moving.

  4. You must be in a car to receive your sign.  Please do not arrive on foot, by scooter bicycle.  Signs will not be provided for anyone who is not in a vehicle.

  5. Thank you in advance for adhering to these guidelines to ensure that everyone is safe while having fun!

The Premier of the first-ever BVMS graduation will take place on Wednesday, June 3rd at 4:00pm!  Each of our 8th grade families will receive an invitation to the event with the link to access the graduation video.

RETURN OF MATERIALS

We will be collecting educational  materials from all students over the course of three days.  On these days, students will return their textbooks, instruments, clean out their lockers, and collect any work that teachers may need to distribute.  In order to ensure that this process is safe for our students, staff, and volunteers, everyone MUST adhere to the following guidelines:

  1.  Only come to the school during your specific day/time slot.  These are:

Monday, June 1st - 8th Grade

  • Last Names A - H: 8am - 10:00am
  • Last Names I - N: 10:30am - 12:30pm
  • Last Names O - Z: 1:00pm - 3:00pm
  1. In order to reduce the number of people on our campus, only students will be permitted through the gates, parents will not be allowed on campus.  If your child has a large instrument to return, please email me ahead so that we can arrange to meet you on the curb to help them.

  2. All students, staff, volunteers and anyone else on campus must wear a mask at all times.  All staff and volunteers will wear gloves.

  3. All students, staff, and volunteers should maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet between themselves and others.  We will have security on campus during these times to supervise and ensure that students maintain this requirement.

  4. Students should bring a backpack with them to carry their textbooks onto the campus and take any items from their lockers or returned school work home.

  5. Students will not be allowed to sit and chat with their friends, teachers, or parent volunteers.

YEARBOOKS

Like many other factories and businesses, our yearbook company experienced a slowdown in their operations this spring.  As a result, our yearbooks will not arrive until June 4th.  We will be taking a day (June 5th) to process yearbooks and prepare them for distribution to students.  Yearbooks will be distributed on the following schedule:

8th Grade - Monday, June 8th

In addition to their yearbooks, our 8th graders will also receive their BHHS sweatshirts, swag bags, community service/honor cords for both semesters and diplomas!  Distribution of  these items for our 8th graders will be on this schedule:

  • Last Name A - H come to the school between 9am and 10:30am

  • Last Name I - N come to the school between 11am and 12:30pm

  • Last Name O - Z come to the school between 1:15pm and 2:30pm

We have a limited number of yearbooks that can still be purchased for $75.  We will send out a form to purchase one of these yearbooks at the beginning of next week.  These books will be available to pick-up on the above schedule.

Please know that we have worked really hard to develop protocols and procedures for all of these events that will serve to keep students as safe as possible.  Thank you in advance for helping us maintain an organized and safe school environment by adhering to each of the protocols outlined above.

Watch for additional information in the coming week regarding student devices and closing remarks from our staff to your families.

As always, I am ever grateful to be a part of the village we have created here at Beverly Vista Middle School.  Enjoy your weekend!

All the best,
Kevin Allen

An important update from the Graduation Committee

Dear 8th grade families,

We would like to update you on a few graduation items.

First, our photo montage is coming along nicely. 8th grade parent, Jennifer Rodier, has been diligently working on the montage which will be sent out to everyone during the last week of school. In order to have the montage ready in time, we will no longer be accepting photos as we have already extended beyond the original deadline. We appreciate everyone’s photo contributions and have no doubt you’ll be pleased with the finished product.

Please send the 2 pictures (young and graduation) the school is requesting for the Graduation video to bvmsgraduationvideo@bhusd.org

Second, due to the Covid-19 safety guidelines mandated by Governor Newsom, we are not able to distribute the gowns and have them returned to school in a safe manner. Since the gowns were purchased by BVPTA, the 8th grades fees did not go towards this cost. Therefore, we would like to facilitate to you the opportunity to purchase a gown of your own for your personal photos. If you desire to order a set for your graduate, you can click on this portal link to buy a Forest Green Matte Cap and Gown. The cost is $25 and it will be shipped directly to you. You will have from May 8th - May 12th to purchase. The order will take approximately 5-7 business days to deliver. This will allow you the chance to take family photos of your child in a cap and gown safely at your home.

Lastly, once we confirm our expenses and deposits from our vendors, including Jostens yearbooks and BHHS (for sweatshirts and swag), we can start processing the refund checks. We appreciate your patience.

We understand how most of you may feel at this time. We cannot be more disappointed with the outcome of the pandemic and how it has affected our 8th graders and their families. Rest assured, we are still working with Mr. Allen and brainstorming ideas together on a safe yet meaningful way to honor and celebrate our graduates.

More to come soon and we look forward to making our kids' last days at BVMS the best they can be.

Sincerely,
The 8th grade Graduation Committee

8th GRADE GRADUATION UPDATE
May 2, 2020
An announcement from Mr. Allen

Dear BVMS 8th grade families,

Resilience is one of our 4Core values at BVMS. Our students, families, and community have tirelessly demonstrated resilience time and time again in this rapidly changing environment. While we will not have a physical graduation ceremony this year (no postponement due to state guidelines), we will be able to come together while separated to celebrate our students in an innovative, unique, virtual ceremony.

Due to the risks involved with COVID-19 we will not be distributing gowns this year.

Just this week we sent you an email announcing our virtual graduation video! We need your help to make this as special as possible, please send us in the highest resolution possible:

  1. A photo of your graduate in either grades K,1 or 2. Please name the file-  LastName_FirstName-Young.jpg.

  1. Take a photo of your graduate (no parents please) in a special, graduation appropriate outfit. Please name this file -  LastName_FirstName-Graduation.jpg.

  1. Please submit both of these photos by May 6th to bvmsgraduationvideo@bhusd.org

If you are unable to take or send your photo, please email Rachel LeGrand at rlegrand@bhusd.org as soon as possible.

Please stay tuned for updates as we continue working to make our virtual graduation as special as possible.

All the best,
Kevin Allen
Principal BVMS

An important message from the Graduation Committee

We are deeply saddened by the recent news received of no physical graduation or even a summer celebration of any kind. We will have the graduation video the District is putting together for us on June 3. We have all looked forward to watching our children walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. We were all looking forward to celebrating their achievements with family and friends on one way or another.

In the coming weeks, we will start mailing out refunds for those who have paid the full amount of the $395 graduation fees. Since yearbooks, sweatshirts, fees and other items have already been purchased, please be aware that you will not receive a full refund.

Principal Allen will announce information at a later time regarding the distribution of our 8th grade items on June 1st.
The pictures you have been sending these past months will still be part of the video montage that the graduation committee will share with all of you, highlighting moments from K-8 of our class of 2020.

As a committee, we remain hopeful that we can one day in the near future move forward with planning a party for our kids to celebrate together when it’s safe to do so. This will be a separate cost per student who is interested.

It has truly been an honor for us to have been a part of this committee for our very first year together at BVMS. We thank everyone who has spent countless hours volunteering for our graduating 8th grade class. We are forever grateful for you.

Sincerely,
The 8th grade Graduation Committee

An announcement from Mr. Waters

Good afternoon 8th-grade parents,

I hope that this email finds you, your children, and your family well. There have been a few questions regarding graduation and I wanted to reach out to you so that you have the most current information rather than having you rely on other sources.

Although the students will not be returning to BVMS to physically attend classes for the rest of the school year, graduation has NOT been canceled at this time. The graduation committee and the administrative team are working diligently to develop a graduation experience that honors the achievement of our students while maintaining the safety of our community. If it is determined by the Board of Education that we will have to cancel specific graduation events then we will inform all families about when and how we will go about reimbursement. However, we look forward to celebrating our 8th-graders completing their middle school experience in one form or another.

If you have any other questions about graduation please contact me directly. I will always do my best to get back to you promptly and with as much information as possible. Stay tuned for more information as we continue to work on the details.

Warm Regards,

Richard Waters

Video Photo Montage 2020

Dear 8th grade families,

We are putting together a video photo montage to be shown at the 8th grade graduation party. Please help us out by sending in pictures of your child through their years in the Beverly Hills Unified School District. We are collecting pictures from Kindergarten through 7th grade from El Rodeo, BV, Hawthorne, and Horace Mann as well as pictures from this year at Beverly Vista Middle School. If your child attended another school, please only send in pictures from the time he or she has been in the BHUSD. Please also check with your children to see if they have any pictures on their devices.

We will be collecting pictures for several months, so if you do not have any yet, please make sure to take as many pictures as possible throughout this school year.

Guidelines for pictures
  • Only send in pictures from K-8th grade from any BHUSD school.
  • Only send in pictures from school related events like field trips, fun runs, Halloween at school, class parties, school carnivals and fairs, holiday shows, performances, and other school events. Please do not send in pictures from birthday parties, bat/bar mitzvahs, vacations, pictures taken at home or any picture not taken at school or a school trip.
  • Please try to send pictures of groups of 2 or more. This is so we can try to include as many kids as possible. Ideally, we would like every child represented.
  • Please send all pictures to bvms2020montage@gmail.com and please label them by indicating what grade they are from and by identifying the kids in the pictures if you can.
  • Please submit all photos by April 1, 2020.

Thanks!
